May be needing more bandwidth...

We are currently pushing the maximum bandwidth allowed by our plan. At this moment we are using 72mbps. This is normally the most we can push outbound at this hour. I would like to have another server set up so we can distribute the load between the boxes. We would then have 200mbps total of connectivity while paying substantially less than if we were to upgrade our connection to a gigabit line.

This is going to be the box, and I kinda need help paying for the hardware. I still have to pay our coder about $1,200 USD for his rent and then ~$2,500 USD for our main server and then some other miscellaneous bills. Geltas's rent really all depends on the exchange rate. Although he won't complain if he is able to buy food with some spare cash.

So, if you want to help us build this to increase the total bandwidth available to Gelbooru, send a PM to me and I'll get back to you.

If you want, comment on the server build as well. I'm in need of a super low watt using box, and this appears to be the best I can make it. If you have spare hardware that is compatible with this list, then you can even mail that to me. I'm not really picky when it comes to that. Anyway, thanks for reading, I hope to have this server up by July. Which, oddly enough, is the due date for all my server bills!

I am attempting to have my server billing set back to a monthly schedule, rather than prepaying it. Once this is done, we will have our new server much sooner than originally planned.

*Edit*
For the first time ever, we have just maxed out the network card for over 1 hour. Awesome! Looks like I'll need to rush this server purchase even more. Or maybe go to a Gigabit port.

There's a number of significant problems with the box you outlined in the newegg wishlist. I'm not entirely sure what you intended when you named it a 4U power saver but included a 1U case. But as is the setup will not function.

The case has a non-replaceable rear I/O panel. The motherboard you chose will not fit it. You can choose a motherboard that will fit the case or try to find a 1U case that can have the rear panel replaced. Expect an additional $100 or more here if you buy a server motherboard.

The case does not come with a power supply. A case with a power supply or purchasing a separate 1U power supply will cost $50-100 more.

The cooler that comes packaged with the retail CPU will not fit in a 1U case. A low profile cooler is required and is not always easy to find.

Your memory configuration includes only 1 stick; this does not allow a dual-channel configuration for increased memory bandwidth. Either purchase a 2x512MB or 2x1024MB configuration or you're halving your memory bandwidth for no good reason.

The memory you chose is listed as requiring 2.2v; try to stay with a product that lists 1.8v for maximum compatibility, especially if you buy a server motherboard.

An additional factor with memory selection is height. Most consumer memory products do not list a height because it is usually a non-issue outside of 1U cases. A 1U case is 1.75 inches tall and most memory is about 1.25 inches tall. Theoretically that should fit but low profile memory (around 0.7 inches) may be required depending on the situation.

The majority of these problems would not exist in a 2U or larger case. Consider that as an alternative or seek help in designing a functional 1U computer.

Yeah, initially it was going to be a 4u, and can still be if I chose some case from Norco, however I was led to believe that the fan was detachable giving it a lower profile.

It appears also that my notes to the build were not added.

You're right about the case. I hadn't noticed it didn't have a removable back panel. I keep skimming over these little things. I suppose going back to the 4u case route is a better option in the long run anyway as I can then use it for many other purposes. Will redesign the list.

*Edit* I have rebuilt the server and will use a 4U case I have on hand so that I can cut costs. I can purchase some rails for it for an additional $40. Dropped the green drives as I've read they aren't great in a server like usage. Added 1TB drives instead to RAID together. RAM is 2.0 volt. It has good reviews, and would total to 4GB.

Update to first post
Posted on: 03/31/09 04:10PM

Server is going to be upgraded to a dedicated 100mbps line April 7th. Site may not be loading during this period as a DNS update will be required to propagate. We may also add an additional data server just in case our upgrade doesn't handle the load.

May I make a suggestion on your build (if you haven't already ordered it)? I'd look into a Corsair power supply. It'd be more expensive, but when it comes to power supplies, they are undoubtedly the most important part of building a computer, especially a server. Also, I would like to donate sometime, if you decide to accept donations.

Well, I've considered Corsair, as that is what is running in my current PC, however I tend to use Thermaltake in servers or once every so often an ABS, depending on what type of connectors I need. Of course this is only for 4u/tower builds. 1U are still a mystery to me at times.

No cash donations are being accepted at this time, however, if you wish to purchase any part on the wishlist, or donate parts that are on the list or donate parts that are compatible, then by all means! If you really want to donate money, you can send me a PM and I'll give you the information to do so. Thanks for your support. :)

Seagate 7200.11 series have a problem with firmware which sometimes bricks the drive. Consider replacing HDDs with WD Black.

This was only a problem with the 1.5TB Seagate drives of a certain firmware version and has since been resolved.

I know probably late (wasn't paying attention) but it was 1 TB and up, and yes it was resolved, but no recall was issued to retailers, so bad drives where/are still floating around. I believe s/n numbers where listed as a range as to what was bad.
