Tag issues redux

I'd like to revive a couple of ideas that have been touched upon. I really think we need to strive to do a better job of tagging images, but I doubt that the average user is going to pay any attention to guidelines. I'm an admin on another board (www.furrysanctuary.com) and I'm constantly having to direct people to read the sticky notes with important information in them, and then reminding people of what I know they've already read. Human beings are inherently stupid creatures, I think.

The true utility of a booru-style board is being able to find what you want, quickly and unambiguously. It works to a point, but I get a lot of erroneous hits on searches because people have been so un-disciplined in the use of tags. It's the best way of finding images you want, but it could be made better.

That said, I'd be happy to donate some of my time to helping clean up the tagging mess, here. I'll give three examples that just jumped out at me as I've been browsing Gelbooru.

This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=475623 ) is a "cameltoe". This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=449022 ) is not.

The wrong answer fails because it's not a cameltoe in any use of the word. It's a vulva. If they look the same, then get a Real Life and play with a Real Girl, and you'll quickly find out that "cameltoe" is a vulva hidden by panties or pants, but still visible as an outline because those panties or pants are so tight that very little is left to the imagination. We have one -- count 'em -- just one image tagged with "vulva" even though most of the explicit images on this board should have that tag. We tag images with "penis" when there's a penis involved, right? We don't use the word "cock" or "dick". Let's have a little equality here for the girls and not use the term "pussy", which is ambiguous, being used in various ways by various people to refer to different parts of a girl's anatomy (doing double-duty for the vulva and the vagina, which some guys can't distinguish between, anyway).

This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=470629 ) is a cervix. This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=24643 ) is not. Neither is this (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=341090 ). Or this (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=275780 ).

The first wrong answer just shows the entrance to the vagina. The second shows, at best, a slightly spread vulva, although it's obscured by censoring. I very much doubt that, based upon what the girl is doing, that her vagina is opened up enough to be able to get a peek all the way to the end. The third wrong answer is, again, just a view of the open vulva and, possibly, a hymen with a single large perforation, but you definitely don't see a trace of a cervix, there.

This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=374529 ) is a creampie. This (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=419098 ) is not. Neither is this (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=38788 ). Nor, is this (gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=379025 ).

The first wrong answer fails because they're still having sex. The second fails because ... well, here's a definition of "creampie" -- leakage of semen from the vulva or anus after sex. The key point, here, is "after_sex" which should be a prerequesite tag to "creampie". :) The third fails for a less obvious reason than the other two even if you discount the dialog balloons. Without them you might think sex is over and he's pulled out and semen is dripping from her vagina, and you could be right. Even if that was the case, though, this wouldn't be a "creampie" because you can't see the vulva or anus (hence there is no "pie" for the "cream", and you really don't know where all the stuff is actually coming from -- no pun intended). The term originated due to the use of "pie" as a euphemism for "vulva" -- when you see semen filling the vulval slit, it looks like the cream in a real cream pie.

I think the solution, for the interim, to this problem (which I know extends to a lot of other tags) is two-fold. We really need that Wiki for tag definitions, and some way to put those definitions in the faces of the people using the tags. And, we need a team of people to start working on better organizing the tags before the whole system becomes so large that it will be impossible to do so. The alias system might be a good start, but it would be a good idea, I think, to have the software automatically convert "obsolete" tags into the good ones, and then automatically prevent one of those tags from ever being entered again. Maybe a Google-like "Did you actually mean ...?" sort of thing. I think most of us have some favorite tags and we know what we're doing in those areas. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen "rape" as a tag when the girl actually seems to be enjoying herself. That's so obvious in some cases that you wonder where the poster's mind was, but we can't control that. What we can do, though, is keep on top of new entries as they happen, while we're working to correct bad tags. If a few of us just stick to some of the more popular tags (and the ones that personally interest us) then we could make a good inroad into this project, and still enjoy doing it.

Good idea? Bad idea? Do I get an Internet or a spanking? Oh, wait. I enjoy both of those.
