Automated downloader / Mass Archieve?
Posted on: 05/17/09 02:41PM

Good day. I've enjoyed using Gelbooru for some time now, but I'm just little bit ticked off the way I need to open every single picture in browser, wait them to load up and then manually choosing save to destination -option and of course repating the process. Now I'm asking if there is functional program to download pictures in their regular size, or nice themed archieve packs to download from somewhere without malicious content? I've tried to get DownThemAll! to work with this site's content, but I end up saving the links on the page. >.<

Yes, I'm maybe asking something that is related to my lazyness, but I couldn't find solution by browsing the forums or by simple googling. Im saying a pretty please in any case. Please help?

There is a Firefox plugin called "Danbooru Downloader". You do have to go to each page but the file is automatically downloaded for you. It is supposed to also work with Gelbooru.

addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9769
You have to register to install as it is an experimental plugin.

I haven't tried this and probably won't. Some of the comments about this plugin make reference to having to open up each image, separately. That makes me wonder why to use it at all, since I have to do that, already! It apparently has a non-intuitive interface and no documentation, to boot. Besides, it probably downloads images with the hash-based filename and doesn't preserve any tags with the image, and when I'm downloading an image from Gelbooru I like to save it with a filename that somehow identifies it (character, artist, manga ... something).

Don't listen to some of the comments as there have been some changes made since they were posted. And there are some descriptions that were added in the last update.

The way it saves is modifiable via tokens.

"%website%\%copyright%\%character\%filename%.%ext%" is the default.

There is an "%all%" token if you want to save EVERY tag. And they are all described.

I've only tried it in Linux but plan to try in Windows again: it's still not entirely Linux compatable but at least it does SAVE.

OK, now it's beginning to sound a little more like a utility I'd like to have. I still need documentation, though. Has that been added? There's no way I can figure out all that token stuff just by experimenting. Also, will in un-install cleanly? I've had some bad experiences with beta versions of Firefox plugins in the past, one requiring me to totally re-install Firefox, after manually cleaning out some garbage left behind. Yeah ... once you're been bitten by a snake you're really careful of anything that looks like a snake.

FTN. I'm pretty sure you can get it from Softpedia.com, Along with a Boat Load of other Free Softwares. Even though this one Extension I have Was experimental and it was filed for MAC, It runs Flawlessly under my environment.

I got Use Flashget and Flashgot, Never had much problems, and a few perks because of it in fact.
Read up on Wikipedia about comparisons between Download Managers. Orbit Downloader I don't trust cause of some M$ fiasco that invaded users Privacy, or some crap like that; there was proof.

I never fully utilized the Flashgot I have, but I think it can do something like Batch Downloading. Docs Might be found in a forum if they have them, they might.
I know it has a Download all option and you can choose which extensions you want or individual Files you want from there via checkbox. Very nice when you don't know where the dam sauce actually resides. I think it works for other Download managers too, but primarily made for Flashget.

By Linux Compatible, do you mean run through WinE or Natively?

Unclean Uninstalls is what makes Virtual Software Environments so beautiful. If something FsUp, you just nuke the dirty one and replace it with in incremental clean one and continue; No wasting life there.
Also, Beta's? You really have to be careful with those.

Thref, I've used flashget/flashgot with Firefox in the past -- on my old computer. I haven't gotten around to fully customizing Firefox on this one, yet, primarily because a lot of the extensions I used to use are still incompatible with FF3. I've heard, though, that many downloaders, and that includes flashget/flashgot, don't work with boorus. What you'll get is not the image but the webpage on which the url of the image is located. It depends, I suppose, on just how an image is linked.

The problem with that extension I mentioned that broke Firefox wasn't so easy to solve as just re-installing Firefox. I had to clean out a lot of stuff that the Firefox uninstall process leaves in place. I was completely baffled for almost a week when everytime I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it that I had the exact same problem (it scrambled the interface display in some way that most of the gadgets I had to access were so far off the screen I couldn't get to them -- rendering Firefox completely unusable, obviously). It was because of a clash between two different add-ons, but the "clash" didn't even go away after what I thought was a clean install. Like I said, it took me a week to track down the problem, and I don't even remember what it was or how I found it. All I know is that for a week I had to use Internet Explorer to access the Internet and that had my nerves all a-jitter. :)

AS for Firefox3, I'd downgrade back to Firefox2 because those bastards failed at launch. It crashes on every other site I go to. I use Firefox2 with plugins and Have never encountered any major problems.

There is an option called Flashgot all, it allows you to choose by extension, in this case .jpg, .gif, .png, etc.

You've heard, but have you tried? I haven't Actually done it, usually cause I have no need too.

I'll Try it just to see what it will do.
Never Mind, the structure is too different.

Thref, one of the reasons a lot of downloaders give unexpected results is because they don't dig past the page with the link. You may have encountered this doing a manual download, before. I know I have. Right-click save-as, fire-and-forget, and you come back, later, only to find that you've downloaded a webpage and not the file you were hoping for. :) Software can be fooled just as easily, especially when the image/file/whatever is being served up by javascript working in the background and isn't directly addressed by the html in the webpage.

So, yeah ... I've "heard" ... and when a lot of people are in agreement with something that usually means they're right. Not always, but usually. Besides, I don't need, or want, a mass downloader for a booru. I always save an image from here with a filename that includes the name of an artist, character, or source if it's available as one of the tags, and I don't know of any downloader that will do that automatically for me.

I checks, Always.

No, I always Check my loads, Better safe than sorry. Especially, if it's a comic. But, the reason is because it doesn't pick up the thumbnail image links; just whats on that page.

No, you don't need or want a mass downloader for boorus. I am very picky so the way I do things now doesn't require me to use such tools.
