Pop-up ads?
Posted on: 11/20/12 10:54AM

Since a week ago, maybe longer, I'm experiencing pop-up advertisements similar to those of isohunt.com and TPB. It happens when I click on the search window. It is the most annoying type of ads in my opinion and I'm asking if it's intentional? Or are you guys experimenting for now?

As far as I know, Gelbooru does not have pop-up ads.

Only pop-unders that occur every so often if your account allows them. You can turn these off and opt for the other two options: intermissions and banners, at your account options page. (You must always have two of these checked)

If you are getting a pop-up every time you click on something, you could have some adware that is triggered every time you click the mouse button. Or click on a certain kind of interface.

I have pop-unders disabled and do not have this problem.

I have the two options without intermission ads enabled and I'm getting the pop-up ads. But I do not get them every single time. It's random. I do not have any viruses or adware but I'm gonna check just to be sure.

We are testing a new popunder ad provider right now. If you're getting these popup ads only once or twice per day, that might be what it is.

Yep, that is it. Another window pops up with an ad for livejadmin.com. Oh well, if it's only once or twice per day it's not that bad. I just hope this site doesn't turn into TPB.

It seems just like obnoxious pop up ads from random sites that ONLY seem to come when surfing gelbooru [ie, they're all related to pornography]. It could be just because i use a phone sometimes to browse the site that i notice it, due to the pop up's nature of opening the desired link in a new tab[subsequently eliminating all immediately retraceable page history] while opening the ad in the current tab, treating it like a new window [again, erasing 'back button'able history], and just being obstrusive , but i also have experienced them on pcs, namely while on gelbooru.

I can't help but think this was something decided by the site, seeing as how they're already comfortable trying out 3 current types of ads out on users. I'm sorry if there is something I'm missing here, but after reading the statement on the completely tolerable intermission ads , that bit about 50% of the income beings jeopardized if people didn't get ads circulated to them, it just feels fishier than other, near identical sister sites, ala danbooru. Danbooru doesn't do intermission ads [again, which are tolerable] and I never see popups from them, whether on my computer, which has mcafee, or on my cell phone, which doesn't. I guess the real issue is, why does gelbooru need so much more income, where danbooru doesn't seem to?

Aside from my primary concern, I earnestly would like to know what money from intermission ads, and popups, if they HAVE been permitted in the time between this thread being posted and now, is needed where it doesn't seem to be needed on some sister sites, like danbooru.

Thanks for your time.

We have no control over the JavaScript that our ad providers use to serve their ads. The only adds we can control like that are the intermissions, which are directly sold.

Gelbooru needs more income because it's paying for the livelihood and homes of two people. We need at least that much income to both operate the site and continue development. We currently only make enough for one from ads, which is why we're also on Patreon.

Danbooru does not have intermission ads because they sell all their ads directly to JList. That site is not a full time job, he has a job elsewhere likely in programming. He makes enough to pay his server bills, from the upgrade accounts and the ads, but still ends up paying out of pocket for anything else beyond that, such as hardware upgrades, techs replacing parts, etc...

Gelbooru is a bit more expensive to run as we are visited more frequently than his site. While we are set at the moment for hosting via other deals I have set up, there are other costs that I can not cover with a 9-5 job. If I were to get that kind of job, my taxes owed would increase dramatically to the point of having the job being pointless and costing me more than not having one. It's really fucked up, but I enjoy working for myself anyway.
