Erasing of single tags
Posted on: 07/22/09 09:10AM

While browsing the taglisting I found a lot of tags only used one singe time.
My suggestion is to delete every single-tag in the database once a month.
It is no problem to do this with a little perl-scripting.

Why use perl when we have PHP? Besides, rather than deleting, perhaps it would be better to go through them manually and retag the images with tags used only once.

I have done this for about 40 to 50 tags, but its very boring.

No one said it would be fun. XD

Perhaps I need to introduce points that you can use to purchase stuff for tagging images correctly...

What points are you thinking off?

Today I counted 29500 single tags. (used only one time)

To delete them manually you will need about 250 hours.
Erasing them with a script will take about 10sec.

This would be a big improve to the database.

That could be bad. There could be tags in there that are for things that haven't been uploaded before that would lose a descriptive tag.

Seeing as we have about 70K users visiting a day, and if I forced every user to add in tags (assigning them seven images), and remove the bad ones on the images.... It would take us about 70 seconds to fix all 500K of the image tags. :D

And no, a script with MySQL would take longer than 10 seconds. I'd put it in the period of a couple hours. Since there is scanning that would have to be done, for every single tagged tag. Not too fun doing that either. :(

Hmm I'd be careful with deleting single use tags, they still may be useful, describing something quite rare (hence the rare use ^^ ).

(Yeah, kinda like saying the same as Deuxsonic, let's just say I agree with him then :) )

Hey hey now. I agree that one single tag is far to little, but some pictures are down right impossible to add more than maybe three tags. When you can't add more tags the picture automatically tags it with a "tagme" tag -- which in turn spams the "tagme" thread.

The Tagme thread should only be a haven for pictures that as of yet don't have any tags and need more details. We don't need it spammed with pictures that already have the "artist", "show" "character" added to them.

Speaking of which, we really should add it to our routine to check the "character_request", "artist_request", "Original" and "source_request" folders. I mean the request part is added in hopes of that somebody have the information asked for. (and there are tons of characters/shows miss-taged as Original)
