Improving the Tag system?
Posted on: 01/02/16 03:42PM

Tags, are of course the primary way to search for things here. But I feel like it could get better than it already is.

For instance, most sites use something like a suggestion system. If you type in a letter, a suggestion box will appear for all the tags that start with that letter. It would certainly help people find the right tag for something, in case they forgot a letter or two, like in an artist's name, some can be very long and easy to mistype.

P.S.: Sorry if I did this wrong, this is my first post here and I don't know if suggestions like these are allowed or not.

gelbooru.com/index.php?page=tracker&s=list

Not sure this would be compatible with our current system. It's essentially doing a search each time you type a letter. That may be to much load for our servers.

A separate API tool that downloads a copy of our tag list maybe once a week to have on your system can be referenced by your browser as needed.

Notice also that we have a lot of junk tags and we might not be able to sort them (say by number of posts) on our end without tons of lag. It can be done client-side easy with a tool.

As much as I'm stupidly quiet, and *should* be "too new" to agree with a mod, Jedi's right about the current setup being a heavy load to be implemented server-side, because there isn't a reliable tag cache (there's over 300,000 tags, if I recall the number right). Making a browser add-on would be far less of a strain.

But, this thread was up the ballpark I was about to open up.

Would it be possible to implement a "child/parent" tag system to make related-element tagging far easier?

ie. Adding "tifa_lockhart" to tags also auto-adds "final_fantasy_vii" to tags.

Worse-case, I figure it'll put a negligible ease on the "tagme" tag, and best-case, we'll finally have a lot of things grouped together instead of it being stupidly "hit-and-miss" on some things.

I'm just taking a stab in the dark here, though; I consider Gelbooru a bit too "sacred" to try to edit tags often.

What you're requesting is called tag implications, and is one of the major planned features for the next release.

For now, moderators can mass-add tags, so if you run into anything with large discrepancy like that, bring it up in the Gardener's Guild thread and it'll get fixed.

About a year ago I finished syncing our implications with Danbooru as much as practical so most of the work has been done already. New posts and miner tags are left unaffected by my edits.

I was thinking a lot about this topic too, but I thought it would be ideal to develop a script or a browser extension. Some of the features that I think would be useful, would be:

- At the moment to add a new pic (from pixiv), translate tags Pixiv to gelbooru tags and the user decide if add or not doing click each one.
- Auto-add Source URL, artist comentarie, title. And maybe the artist too, if the pixiv username match with one of gelbooru tags, maybe auto-add too.
- How to said Omio, "child/parent" obligatorie tag, example: Mario -> Nintendo.
- Another one could be similar the previous, but optional, some tags could have more than one parent, and the user decide which anothers parent doing click, example: Mario -> mario_kart, mario_kart_8
- Other feature could be if the user add an innexistent tag, mark in red (or whatever) preventing entering more junk tags.

Would need write a Excel database updated shared online, later port in a js (or whatever)...... There are many ideas, but thats I think those are esential.

I would like to participate in a similar activity, but would have to study a lot js, css

That's exactly what the OP was suggesting.
