It's possible but it's never happened. Our constitution has been amended 27 times since 1789 including the Bill of Rights but it was never completely rewritten. The US now has the oldest continuously used constitution in the world. 38 or more states would need to approve the implementation of a new constitution and I don't see that happening any time soon.

What we live in is no democracy, but an oligarchy. The candidates are bought and paid for.

Times change. The founding fathers must have had illiterate uneducated masses in mind. But then again, ignorance is still a thing. cdn.quotesgram.com/small/...hill-Democracy-Quotes.jpg

Now that I'm more awake I can address this. The reason was that the union would only work if all the former colonys where together in a united union. This couldn't happen in a democracy because then Boston and New York would elect all our leaders. The Electoral College made things more fair for the less populated states, without it they would not want to be part of the union.

Edit: Also, by this time the average citizen could read. There was a bible in almost every home. Even if schooling wasn't practiced by every family they could at least read, at least those qualified to vote at the time witch didn't include women, blacks or teenagers.

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.

There is a (literal btw) Romanization of the opposite, about the guy who the voters, the people, want to rule for them and lead them but he doesn't want to do it himself. He'll do it anyway though, as duty calls, and then return to his old life as soon as its done.

Concept borrowed from the Roman Republic's Dictator system that allowed a man to assume central power during a time of crisis. A big deal as a Republic is supposed to be somewhat Decentralized by nature. Crisis is solved, the dictator retires and returns power to the senate before returning to his humble life of farming.

Important to take into consideration with the American election system... because we very much thought we were adopting the same concept with a more permanent title of president (with non-permenant occupiers of said position) in our Republic. And Washington is sometimes considered one of the few or only president(s) to truly follow this in the Latin way.

@jedi1357 I guess the founding fathers really wanted to collect taxes from as many people as possible. Even if it meant equalizing the will of the few with the will of the many.

@Anti_Gendou That's funny. What presidential candidate is of humble origin (farmer, etc) and doesn't want to win/be reelected? People like Washington are rare.

Mai waifu (Horo from Spice & Wolf) is best president. Not only has she lived long enough to become wise, but she can also tell when people lie to her.

What character would you guys pick for this job and why?

Before 1913 the people where not taxed by the federal government. All federal revenue came from tariffs. (Foreign countries/companies wanting to import/export goods with us.) The progressive liberals didn't come into power until the 20th century.

Edit: I will admit though that a lot of that early money came from the cotton/slave trade.

No taxes? No wonder people wanted to live in America. I give up on my little guessing game. Times were too different, good lesson though. Doesn't anyone want to play "pick an anime character for president"?

There where still state property (and later income) taxes, just no federal taxes. Americans are taxed twice now.
