I realize it's necessary for some characters, but do we really need to do it for every single new character? I've seen it done for a handful of characters with unique names.

This is usually done for characters with only one name or would otherwise be ambiguous to avoid confusion. sumomo_(* is a good example. Pokemon characters almost always have only one name in Japanese is another example.
Please use forum #1706 for tag questions like this in the future.

I get that part but why does Soldier: 76's tag have to be Soldier:_76_(Overwatch)? Why's Genji's tag Genji_(Overwatch) when it should be Shimada_Genji? I'm just saying there are so many characters that don't need it as there aren't other tags or things to confuse them with.

Soldier:_76_(Overwatch) is not how I would have put it but we get that imported from Danbooru who also supplies some 70% of our posts and tags so we usually go with what they use. Not only that but john_morrison_(overwatch) is aliased to Soldier:_76_(Overwatch). Also shimada_genji and genji_shimada are aliased to Genji_(Overwatch). The answer to that question is "Danbooru uses it so we do too."
I don't play overwatch so I don't know if any spoilers may play a part in deciding what tag to use. That may also be a reason.
