I need help making webms to post
Posted on: 02/16/18 07:32PM

Over the past few months I've been converting pixiv and twitter paizuri/other animations to mp4 and webm formats using ffmpeg. The mp4 versions are high quality, but I usually have issues with ffmpeg dropping frames when converting to webm from any input filetype, so when they loop it looks bad. I've confirmed it's some issue with ffmpeg or how I use ffmpeg as the webms I've made using XMedia Recode don't have looping issues, however they're usually about 3 times the mp4 filesize. I was wondering if I could get some help since I can't upload mp4 files and don't want to upload a shitty looping webm.

Edit: After doing some testing I've found that it's a playback bug/issue in VLC, as the webm plays fine through different media players.

Why can't you upload mp4 files? Our upload form accepts AVI, mp4, WebM, and mpeg/mpg.

It's possible you are not using the most recent version of FFMpeg as well. We updated our version that supported the GIF extension a bit better, and performance actually increased marginally. What does an encoding line look like for you when doing webm?

So I've solved my issues and was able to upload some mp4 and webm files for some edits I'm doing. The only problems I have now is that the smaller resolutions are being resized too much. This seems to be the case on other sites like danbooru and rule34's players as well. Do I need to make their resolution fit a more standard aspect ratio/res like 480x360 or 720x480? An example is the res for one webm I upscaled was 348x512, but like I said it takes up more space on screen when I check my post than a 348x512 resolution should.

That's not you, that's our Gelcom player. If a user clicks original image they will see the video in it's original size.

Thanks for the info. I've made a 720x480 res webm and it looks fine.

Out of curiosity, why does the player do that? Some things get upscaled that are already fairly large res.

Probably when it is generating the file, it sees the resolution as a different number than what it is. Probably a bug with FFMpeg that can only be fixed on their end. Typically it can be fixed by clicking original image and the resolution goes to normal.
