Mostly its because people were using hacks and bots to manipulate them. People could do this with upvotes too I suppose, but generally, I haven't seen it happen much since the change.

So it's not full-fledged reddit again? Good riddance IMO. The only comments that should "disappear" are ones that are blatantly spam or calling for something illegal like violence, doxxing, harassment, etc. You aren't forced to read the comments, no one's making you scroll down in the middle of your business.

They were removed because of manipulation, also some immature people tend to have "downvote battles" with each other, like fighting over pairings or simply downvoting pics and comments of users they don't like regardless of the content, so that their comments get hidden by the system.
So in the end downvoting was removed and every comment is visible now. Harassment, spam and other types of comments like that can be reported.
If you don't want to see comments for a different reason, they added an option to completely deactivate comments in your account settings.

Downvote buttons are an "I'M A BUTTHURT LITTLE BIIIIIIITCH T.T" button and you know it. If you cannot refute someone with words, then that's too bad.

Cause assholes would downvote even a normal convo where someone is just asking a question.
Example:
Comment 1: "Is she a zombie?"
Comment 2: "Actually she's a Jangshi, a kind of Chinese vampire."
Comment 3: "Anyone who likes this shit is an autistic fag."
Comments 1&2 would have 20 down-votes and be hidden unless clicked on, while comment 3 will have 50+ up-votes and be the first thing you see when you scroll down.
