Is there any way to follow artist or other tags?

Yes. Search for the tag (or combination of tags) on the site, then click the bookmark icon to the right of the search bar. This will save the search so you can immediately access it and view the newest posts from the Saved Searches page, which is accessible from the dark gray toolbar at the top of the page on post search and view pages.
