For example, the artist tag "kagamine-ikka" shows as having 171 images on the left hand side, but when I look at the thumbnails there are three full pages of 42 displayed and 39 on the fourth page for 165=42x3+39.
How do I view the "missing" 6 images? The fringeBenefits/"Display all site content" option is turned on.

maybe just a guess but possibly they were deleted ones ?

Yes, it's normal for tag counts to not add up. When an image is deleted, the tags are still counted until it is more permanently purged.
