Yeah no. This is one I will fight. The Monsterverse King Kong (2017) is in a shared cinematic universe with the 2014 Godzilla. King Kong 1962 and Monsterverse are not off topic when 1962 has had a crossover with Godzilla and the Monsterverse one is gonna have one in 2020, not to mention they are strong and big enough compared to most versions to actually be considered a kaiju. People stopped caring about the second Godzilla movie Legendary is making the moment they heard that they plan the third film to be a crossover with King Kong and made references to Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah in Kong: Skull Island going so far as to have cave paintings of them in the after credits scene. The creature profiles are pretty much just promos to get people hyped for the crossover and it can be argued that since King Kong will fight Godzilla, Skull Island and it's creatures will show up in that film again.

I'd argue it's more on topic than Pacific Rim, at least it's sharing a universe with a Japanese franchise.
