Just a random question.
And by modern pokemon, I mean starting from 2019's Sword and Shield.
The new pokemon game (Z-A legends) looks like garbage. Not interested in it at all, not buying it, etc. I'm really just looking forward to how the Hex Maniac looks. Congratulations for trying something new with the battle system, but everything looks way too outdated. Shit still looks like a Wii game with HD textures.
As a huge former pokemon fan (Emerald was my first ever video game, I think) I can't help but to still feel disappointed by the mainline console entries all being so subpar. I haven't played any of them, but I'm confident I'm not missing out on anything, lol.

Older generations fans complain about the newer games, saying they're not as good as the older generations.
Newer generations fans complain about the older generations fans being boomers who never give a chance to newer games and they just wanna enjoy their games.
Critical fans try to give newer games a chance but will critic when the games fall short in terms of quality, story, designs, and gimmicks. They're of the opinion that Pokémon barely progresses as a franchise.

...so, why aren't you playing them now? You could pick up the latest one, or go for the popular ones, or go in release order if you're feeling retro.

"Modern" Pokemon started after Ruby & Sapphire. Anyway, Pokemon peaked after Black & White was released, the sequels just made things better (as should for a sequel). Afterwards it became a glorified shovelware when XY was released, no one was pointing out since it was the first 3D game in the series, but it really got Gamefreak's hack skills noticed. And it shows more and more to the point where the cracks became a wide empty hole thanks to SWSH. This game was the highlight of this problem when it was started ever since it jumped to 3D. I consider the modern era of pokemon to be around either Pokemon XY or Sun/Moon. Ruby and Sapphire was only two gens after the first game.

Legends arceus seems like they were going the right direction cuz it was decent but after that everything went to shit especially the bland character designs but yh for me pokemon has been going down hill just recycle and repeat

cripes,someone who got past the 90s and didn't even get the chance to meet and greet a Pikachu,Lucario,or Arceus at least once? such a sad life you lived through...but don't worry,there's a lot to make up for it..I can safely say that you should start with the 4th generation. no harm in that.

I'll be honest, Pokemon was never good. Yes, I have massive nostalgia for Gen 2, even though I never owned them and only played them via emulation. And looking back, even that isn't good.
Gen 1 was a broken pile. Literally, its coding was a broken pile that barely held together. Gen 2 was leagues better, but it's still the same boring ass formula. Gen 3's only strong point was the Gen 1 remake, and even then, meh (but at least we got Leaf out of it). Gen 4 is a massive pile of janky, slow shit with way too many HMs. The Gen 2 remake was horrible in that engine. Gen 5 is equal parts stupid because they booted all the old Pokemon until post game for the first half with a cock tease of a decent story that turned to dog shit to boring ass, soulless human characters (despite Mei coming from this) coming in the second half without anything good to balance it out. After that, I just gave up, but looking at them, it's basically same shit, with still terrible plots, even worse designs both human and 'mon alike, and increasingly just going further up its own asshole.
