I follow many artists on the site in order to upload their works on imageboards. Weeks or months ago I noticed the site asking for a facial scan or ID to view some works. Never agreed because I know despite saying they don't they probably store and share data. But now I'm not being asked to scan anything. I just get a blur and then the photo loads. I'm wondering if my VPN or if my camera is scanning my face without my knowledge or consent. Guess I'll learn when my camera stickers arrive.

If you're that worried, take away the app's camera permission. Then it definitely can't take a photo of your face.

But it's unlikely it's doing it on the sly, because that'd be a great way to get kicked out of Apple's and Google's app stores. I believe the facial scan thing is currently in testing, so it's not being forced on everyone yet.

Put a bit of tape over your cameras when you're not using them. The same thing people do with webcams.

If you're worried about the tape getting gunk on the lense cover or something, then put a bit of cloth/microfiber over the center of the tape like a homemade bandaid. Now the tape can't touch the glass.

Use a weak adhesive tape like masking tape.
You can even cover the back of the masking tape with some fancy pattern duct tape if you're feeling cute.
So long as the duct tape doesn't touch the device itself.

I'm not doubting the possibility since this whole government surveillance shit has gotten super fucked up and overwhelming, but I think it's very unlikely.

I feel like they couldn't risk doing stuff like that. The company responsible would have hell to pay if that was ever found out. Class action lawsuits and all that.

Then again, I could be painfully ignorant and oh-so-very wrong. There was that whole ordeal from Edward Snowden after all....

I've had a piece of duct tape over my laptop's camera for over 10 years and I still get emails from people spoofing my own email address saying the email was sent from my own account and they have pictures of me jacking it to innapropriate things.


Uh-huh.

Just look at the UK.
All of those camera networks, combined with the location data from your devices and vehicles.

You'd have to be a hemit sheep farmer who hates electronics to avoid it.
(until you go into town to sell sheep and sheep accessories that is.)

If someone's really worried about residue get a roll of gaffer's tape. It doesn't leave any residue behind and is as opaque as duct tape. I put off buying a roll of that for a long time because it's not cheap, but I've almost finished that first roll and bought a second. It's insanely useful stuff. Sticks better than masking tape, but peels off more like masking tape than duct tape. I wish it was cheaper so I could justify buying rolls of it in multiple colors...


I see those in my spam folder now and then and I don't even have a webcam attached to my computer. I do have a webcam, but it's attached to a computer in the den, since my dad used to do video-conferencing for his continuing education credits. It's pointed at the ceiling and I rarely go in that room, so unless they get hot and bothered by ceilings they're out of luck.
