i remember there being a irc channel ~5 years ago but i don't see it anymore.
at first i thought i was crazy/misremembering but there are still a lot of references to it on the forum.
was it removed at some point? if so why aren't there any notices/information regarding its removal?

we got an """"upgrade"""" and named it "live chat", but that too seems to be killed off...I don't know what's the reason to kill this feature twice...but that's how it is.

It was closed when we got Discord in 2018.

so we go third party then.......I'm sure the legal end would be a different type of headache to deal with..because that IRC isn't even at gelbooru's control.
since we're just participants to the third party channel...there will be a chance something isn't right, and none of us have the right kind of authority to fix it..

A trick I've found is going to the other user's channel, click on their Live Chat button, and use the "Username/Message" option on the first screen that pops up, but you have to go back to their channel and do it again for every message.
So if you wanted to send me a message, you'd just click on my username here, then go to my "Live Chat" button, then type your message under "Message", and then finally click "Send Message". It's simple but tedious.
To send another message, click on their username from the chat log to go to their channel again and then repeat the following steps. It becomes a loop.

Happens to me too btw. Just another Gelbooruism. I haven't used the IRC in so long I forgot it was even a thing. It's mostly been phased out for the discord channel and the live chat is supposed to be for replacing the user PMs.

irc is so much better than discord though. i'm not sure i could even use discord if i were to ignore all the issues. they require a fair bit of personal info for any amount of usage beyond just opening the app some of which requires money like a phone number.
all your messages are collected and monitored, theres a lot of dystopian bs that they do with them too. also they embed spyware disguised as being a component of the things things outside of the core functionality.
they can ban you whenever they want, often without a specific reason.
a mountain of issues with the platform functionality itself, mostly due to greed.
crypto scammers and other forms of malicious users are basically let loose without significant consequences because it benefits discord.
