I think the reason why tensa zangetsu is younger than zangetsu is that the sword becomes smaller, therefor i doubt every bankai spirit would be a younger version of the zanpakutou's.

i agree with tsukuyomi, the spirit represents the sword, meaning how their form changes is based off of the powers, with ichigos bankai a compact but stronger form than his shikai, their size would be smaller, but it would be freaky to see a midget of an adult, so it would be compact = younger as well as smaller when compared in size.

twilight_jester, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. This isn't a permanent new form for Zangetsu; it's just the form he takes on when he's in Bankai. If it were Zangetsu's new true form after Ichigo got Bankai, it would've showed up earlier. Tensa Zangetsu is just how he looks as Bankai; Zangetsu is how he looks as Shikai. It's no different from the sword itself looking different in the two forms.
