The girls I dated that liked pain didn't really get off on the pain so much as they got off on pain being used as a means of dominating them. Pinching nipples, choking, slapping, etc. Doing so to either get their attention, put them in their place, and/or reinforce the fact that they do not have control of the situation, rather I did. You can do this stuff without being abusive. I would never slap my girlfriend out in public; that is disrespectful. But if we were playing in the bedroom privately, I'll slap her if she's into it and I feel she deserves it.

Anon 7 has it right. The key is to teach the sub her place, not to cause her pain. That's why most bondage whips aren't actually painful. They are meant to sting, not hurt.
