The boring part of computer-controlled sex machines is calibrating it to a new volunteer. He wanted to get it right for his girlfriend, so popping into the local asylum at night allowed him to test it on multiple patients, who would not be believed anyway.

Restraining device are stocks, not a pillory. A pillory is a single device that restrains the head and hands of a person.
