Because for many people, the restroom is one of the very final 'private spaces' for them where they can shed all conscience of would-be observers. I think you'd be surprised how many people feel like they're being watched even in their own home. It's a common psychological phenomenon. But I digress. Being such a space, a person often finds it a great place to relax and think - real 'me time'. So in migrates trappings of time-consumptive behavior - a magazine or wordsearch, a psp or an ipad, you name it - to give themselves something to do, to let their mind wander.
Once the mind is wandering from a person deep in a comfort zone, it enters what's known as a eunoic state. It's nothing too different. It's kind of like a frame of mind that people've long-forgotten used to be important enough to have a word for it. Eunoia - or beautiful thinking. A person is free to let their 'younger' imagination seep in and flavor their thoughts. Simpler, more elegant ideas received in a eunoic state solve life issues more effectively - essentially - compared to someone who doesn't see past their own experiences - like magic.
