Not to mention, in almost every anime that I've seen, the girl calls her brother "oniichan", or "'niichan". I've only ever heard guys use the 'ani' or 'ane' variants.

It's a matter of personal preference between Onii-chan and Ani.

Onii-SAN refers to somebody else's older brother.

*facepalm* Seriously, every one of those examples can either refer to your own brother, someone else's brother, some random young guy (teenager to young adult) who's older than you, etc. There is no meaning preference due to slightly different forms.

Japanese is random and stupidly confusing like that, with many such ambiguous words with many different meanings. Don't even try to understand it. The moment an anon manages to truly do so, the universe will explode. I guarantee it.
