If it was in afterburner, the nozzles would be wide open. Closing the nozzles only increases thrust on normal power; with afterburner it actually reduces thrust because the engines can't move as much air through.

Not always, anon 1. I've seen narrow exhausts for take-offs, depending on the aircraft... and the TF-30 has a really wacky profile.
