Now Viewing: stardust_crusadersTag type: Copyright Tag refers to images specifically referencing the third Jojo story arc. It debuted in 1989 and encompasses Volumes 12-28. It is the most well known and iconic of all the Jojo arcs with the most adaptations. It has been adapted into multiple anime and video games. It introduced the Stands to the series, which were special supernatural powers that were unique to the being it was bestowed to and their introduction greatly changed the way fight scenes played out. Stand powers can give beings increased intelligence along with the special powers it gives them and reflect the users' personalities in some fashion. Stands also have physical forms which come in all shapes and sizes, however, they are only visible to other Stand users. The Stands were very well received and helped distinguish Jojo from other action series at the time and the Stands completely displaced the Ripple technique used in the first two arcs. Instead of super powered martial artists battling against supernatural enemies, battles now consisted of Stand users trying to figure out their opponents' abilities and using their Stands' abilities, often in some unorthodox ways, to counter each other. The series is set in 1989. Kuujou Joutarou is a teen delinquent who has gotten himself thrown in jail. Joutarou has intentionally gotten himself in trouble because he has discovered that he has a strange supernatural ability that other people do not seem to have and he feels that prison would be a good place for him to experiment with this new ability without endangering innocents. Joseph Joestar, Joutarou's grandfather, pays Joutarou a visit in prison, accompanied by a Muslim fortune teller named Mohammed Avdol and Joutarou's mother Holly. Joutarou refuses to leave but Avdol manifests his Stand and attacks Joutarou. In the ensuing fight, the bars holding Joutarou in the cell are destroyed and Avdol immediately quits fighting revealing that he was intentionally provoking Joutarou in order to get him to leave. Joseph and Avdol explain that Joutarou has what is called a Stand and he gained this ability because of the reemergence of the vampire Dio Brando who had been trapped under the sea for a century. Dio has hijacked the body of Jonathan Joestar and spent the century sleeping within a coffin which has recently been salvaged. Dio freed himself and killed those who recovered him. Dio has also gained a mysterious Stand ability of his own that is deadlier than almost any other Stand. Dio is now in Egypt and has amassed an army of fellow Stand Users, setting his sights on purging the Joestar bloodline. Joutarou learns that his mother Holly has also developed a Stand ability but unlike Joutarou she can not control it and becomes physically ill. Joutarou decides to team up with Joseph, Avdol and a fellow Stand user and high school student Kakyoin Noriaki to head to Egypt, stop Dio, and rescue Holly. This arc was originally intended to be the conclusion of the Jojo saga. Araki envisioned the series as going through 3 stages, ending with a final stage where a Japanese Jojo leaves Japan to finish the conflict that began in the first arc. Ironically, the series' popularity exploded with this arc, and it became the most well-known and influential of the series, influencing both the future direction of the series and other anime/manga. Araki also didn't want to do a tournament arc, which is common in shonen action manga, so he came up with the idea to make this arc like a road movie, with a strong emphasis on the sights and sounds of the various locations the heroes travel through.
