It is an adaptation of the 2011 novel High Speed! written by Ouji Kouji which received an honorable mention in the novel category at the Kyoto Animation Award contest in 2011. The novel was adapted into a light novel that premiered shortly after the anime, July 8, 2013. A second season is currently in production. It is also unusual amongst Kyoto Animation series for having a male dominant cast full of handsome young men. The TV series is directed by Utsumi Hiroko and written by Yokotani Masahiro, with music is composed by Katou Tatsuya. Character designs are by Nishiya_Futoshi. In March 2013, a short preview of the series was released, which became phenomenally popular, spawning many petitions asking for Kyoto Animation to turn the clip into a full blown series, which eventually came true although Kyoto Animation was already planning on making the series prior to the commercial's viral popularity as a splash image for the series was released back in 2012. It is a slice of life sports series centered around a male high school swim team. When they were children Haruka, Rin, Makoto, and Nagisa were the best of friends with the shared love of swimming. Eventually, Rin left them and headed to Australia to undergo more intensive training for swimming. Now Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa are in high school. Although they are still friends, they lost a lot of their drive to swim and are not part of a club. One night, Rin suddenly returns from Australia, but he has completely changed. He is no longer the friendly boy he used to be and has become angry and contemptuous of his former friends and has become even more competitive than he used to be. He challenges Haruka to a swimming match but is unsatisfied with his victory over his friend/rival Haruka because Haruka no longer has his competitive edge. Nagisa gains the idea that Haruka, Makoto, and himself should start a swim club and regain their drive to swim. Haruka, Nagisa, Makoto, newcomer Rei, and their manager Matsuoka Gou, Rin's sister, form the Iwatobi Swim Club. The boys begin intensively training for upcoming competitions and attempt to repair their relationship with Rin. The series notably has an androgynous naming scheme, most of the characters have names that can be applied to the opposite gender. Although it is not a yaoi series, it is famous for having a lot of homoerotic subtext in the characters' interaction. As the series is about male swimmers, there is a lot of attention paid to the cast's athletic physiques. Cast: Main Characters: Nanase_Haruka_(Free!)
