The first season debuted on April 29, 2012 and ended on July 22, 2012. The second season, Next Stage, debuted on January 5, 2013 and ended on March 30, 2013. It is directed by Kawamori Shouji and Hiraike Yoshimasa. It is written by Kawamori and Okada Mari. Music is composed by Takaki Hiroshi and Slavomir Stanislaw Kowaleski. Characters are designed by Ebata_Risa. Although the series is based off of the AKB48 and features many references to the group as well as their songs, the singers in the series are not the actual members of the group. In the series story, the AKB48 group are successors of the original group and the girls in the group inherit the original members' names once they prove to be qualified. However, the original singers do play various characters of the series. The series is set in a universe where music is banned by the governments of many planets and anyone who does anything music related is violently repressed by a group called the DES. Even if they can not openly express such desires many inhabitants still yearn for music. AKB48, in this series a group of idol singers who double as resistance fighters, is determines to bring music and peace to the inhabitants of the universe and they travel around the galaxy risking their lives in order to spread music to the populace. Despite their combat skills, they refrain from killing and wish to spread peace. After the group stages a concert on their planet, Motomiya Nagisa, Aida Orine, and Ichijou Yuuka, are inspired to join the AKB48 group themselves. Four years after the concert, the girls successfully pass an audition to join the group. The government has slightly relaxed its stance towards music, but it is still something it strongly discourages and the DES continues to violently repress anyone who publicly promotes music. Quite a few of the girls' loved ones also do not want the girls to become idol singers. Despite the obstacles to their dreams, the three girls continue to pursue them and leave their home planet to receive training to become an AKB48 member and spread music in the galaxy. Much like Kawamori's most famous work Macross, AKB0048 blends music with large space opera-esque battles and dogfights. Sometimes, the battles take place at the same time as the big concerts with the idol singers singing and dancing while battling opponents.
