It is a sequel to Super Mario 3d Land and like its predecessor, blends 3D with the linear obstacle course style platforming levels of the 2d Mario games. It was released on November 22, 2013 for the Wii U. It is directed by Hayashida Koichi and produced by Kazami Yoshiaki. The music is composed by Yokota Mahito, Kondo Koji, Minegishi Toru, and Iwata Yasuaki. Like Super Mario Galaxy, the game's soundtrack is predominantly instrumental with quite a few orchestral and jazz pieces. Some of the tracks are orchestral remixes of tunes from the game's predecessor. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad are wandering around outside when they spot a mysterious fairy like creature called a Sprixie. Bowser suddenly appears and kidnaps the Sprixie, escaping through a pipe. The heroes follow him through the pipe and end up in another world, called the Sprixie Kingdom. The heroes set out to help the Sprixies of the kingdom and foil Bowser's plans. The game notably has the same roster of playable characters as the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2 making this game one of the rare Mario games where Peach is not kidnapped and is a playable character alongside the Mario brothers. The characters also function the same way they do in that game. The game introduces a new cat suit power up that allows the characters to climb up walls and cling to them. The game allows up to four players to play at the same time, just like the New Super Mario Bros. Wii and U games. This also marks this game as the first 3d Mario game to have full co-op multiplayer. The playable females of the game were not originally intended to be playable. Koizumi suggested that Peach should be playable to make multiplayer more interesting so that players can pick a character that suits their personality. Rosalina was added to make the post-ending content more interesting and as a response to her popularity as a character. The game has also spawned a spinoff centered around Captain Toad called Captain_Toad:_Treasure_Tracker. Said spinoff consists of levels inspired by the Captain Toad levels within this game.
