Now Viewing: danmakuTag type: General A term that literally translates as bullet curtain, also known as bullet hell. Tag refers to images with massive quantities of projectiles on screen at once. The term was coined to refer to the highly difficult subgenre of shoot-em-up games that began to emerge during the 1990s. Said games required the player to dodge massive quantities of bullets, to the point that the bullets seem to cover almost the entire screen. The players must survive by squeezing themselves through the tight spaces the bullet patterns provide. The players are often given a limited number of special bomb attacks that can clear out the bullets if the players think they won't survive otherwise. The game 1993 game _Batsugan_, developed by Toaplan, is often considered to be a proto-danmaku game. Many of _Batsugan_'s developers would go on to form the studio Cave, which is often credited as being responsible for popularizing the genre with their _DonPachi_ games. _Touhou_ is one of the most popular series that belongs to this genre, and many fan-artists and animators will draw images/create animations of the characters firing and dodging massive amounts of projectiles. The _Touhou_ games are also known for their long and elaborate bullet patterns, some of which have recognizable shapes, that are prominently featured in the series' lengthy boss battles. Any image or GIF showing the Touhou characters using the projectiles they use in the games can be tagged as danmaku as well.
