Now Viewing: crucifixionTag type: General 磔 An early method of execution invented by the early Assyrians. The condemned was laid out on a huge cross and held up there until their death, supposedly caused by asphyxiation although this has been debated. Nails and/or rope were used to hold the condemned in place. Because of its use by the ancient Romans to execute Jesus, depictions of crucifixion often carry religious connotations. However, it also appears in some Japanese works after being popularized by episodes of certain sentai and tokusatsu series, particularly ultraseven_(series) and ultraman_ace_(series) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This was nevertheless also a reference to the crucifixion of Christ - the co-creator of these series, tsuburaya_eiji was a Roman Catholic convert - but has become a sentai trope by itself which occasionally pops up in other genres.
