The title is abbreviated as Marimite. It originated as a short story written by Konno in February 1997 with illustrations by Aoi_Yuma. The story premiered in the February issue of the shoujo magazine Cobalt. Konno then expanded the story into a light novel series which ran from April 24, 1998 to August 28, 2012. The novels are illustrated by Hibiki_Reine. It has been adapted into multiple seasons of anime, light novels, a manga, and a live action film. The anime adaptations are animated by Studio_Deen, directed by Matsushita Yukihiro, written by Yoshida Reiko, and have soundtracks composed by Katakura Mikiya. The series is set in the upper class Catholic girl's school, Lillian Girls' Academy, which promotes a very formal code of behavior. When the students greet each other, they say "Gokigenyou (ごきげんよう), as opposed to more informal greetings like "Ohayou!" The school has a special sœur system where second year and third year students select a younger student to be their sœurs. The older student is to watch over and guide the younger one. The relationship is symbolically solidified by the older student giving the younger one a rosary. Konno drew inspiration from her own experiences as a student at an all-girl high school though her school was not Catholic like Lillian. However, she did attend a Christian kindergarten as a little girl. The story follows Fukuzawa Yumi, a middle-class first year student, who ends up catching the attention of the aloof second year student Ogasawara Sachiko. A chance meeting between the two of them in which Sachiko gently straightens Yumi's handkerchief leads to a series of events that culminate in Yumi joining Lilian Academy's student council and becoming Sachiko's petite sœur. The story follows Yumi as she forms relationships with her fellow student council members and takes on her newfound responsibilities as a student council member. The series is a character-focused story that emphasizes the close relationships and bonds that form between the girls. While there are male characters in the series, the female characters are the primary focus. It is often seen as one of the most iconic yuri series of the late 1990s-2000s and parodies of yuri anime/manga often parody this series. Despite its reputation as a yuri series, there is no sexual content and almost no kissing in the series and most of the relationships are akin to 'romantic friendships.'
