As a result of the numerous bad experiences he's been through, he has become hardened and is willing to do some morally questionable things in pursuit of his goals. He has one mechanical red hand that he can fire as a rocket. Unlike what the game's promos and most of the story leads the player to believe, he is the true protagonist and player character of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, not Big Boss. The truth is revealed in the game's secret true ending. Ishmael is the real Big Boss. Venom Snake was originally one of Big Boss's loyal troops and was the medic that operated on Paz in order to extract the bomb that Skull Face placed in her. When the helicopter they were on crashed, both Big Boss and the man who would become Venom Snake were knocked into a coma. Venom Snake received plastic surgery so that he would look like Big Boss as part of a plan by Big Boss to throw Skull Face off of his tracks. When he woke up, Big Boss and Revolver Ocelot deliberately implanted new memories within him leading him to believe and act like he was Big Boss himself. While the rest of the world had their attention focused on Venom Snake, Big Boss secretly worked on forming Outer Heaven with Ocelot. While Venom Snake 'shares' many traits with the original Big Boss, he is notably more quiet, because he is also meant to represent the player. In the game's conclusion, Big Boss thanks Venom Snake and by extension the players for everything they've done, declaring that they are worthy of the title Big Boss. Big Boss and Ocelot's plan proves to be highly successful with virtually no one else realizing that Venom Snake isn't Big Boss. However, Kazuhira Miller eventually finds out the truth and is so offended by Big Boss creating Outer Heaven without him that he turns against his old friend, describing Big Boss as an awful man by the time of his appearance in Metal Gear 2。 Venom Snake is also the 'Big Boss' that Solid Snake fought against in the original Metal Gear, meaning that the Big Boss most players are familiar with actually debuted in Metal Gear 2.
