During the 1990s, he often appeared clean-shaven, but from 2002 onwards, he often appears with facial hair. He got into acting as a child, starting off in commercials and educational films, then transitioned into TV series, and finally movies. His breakthrough was the movie 1997 movie Titanic. Although it made him a star, he prefers to distance himself from said movie due to him wanting to be seen as a legitimately good actor and not just popular for his looks. Since then, he has often taken roles very different from Titanic's Jack Dawson. He often plays tormented and troubled heroes and has become Robert De Niro's successor in being director Martin Scorsese's favored leading man. His acting has often been praised and he has been nominated for Academy Awards multiple times, but is also notorious for frequently losing said awards to other actors, a fact that has become a running joke concerning him.
