It originated as a 2008 one-shot that was remade into a 2011 one-shot published in the February 2011 issue of Bessatsu Shounen Magazine before being turned into a full blown series that ran from August 7, 2013 to November 19, 2014. It was released on September 17, 2016. Ishida Shouya is a depressed and misanthropic boy who has gone through the end of elementary school and most of high school friendless. He used to have friends in elementary school and was infamous for rabble-rousing due to a constant need for something stimulating to happen. However, his life changed after a deaf girl named Ninomiya Shouko transferred into his class. This was the first time any of the students had encountered a deaf person, and although they initially try to accommodate her, they soon come to see her as a nuisance. Ishida sees her as an opportunity to alleviate his boredom so he relentlessly picks on her, even getting other students to join in on bullying her. Yet no matter how severe the bullying gets, she never fights back or appears to show any grudge against her classmates. One day, the school decides the bullying has gone too far when eight of Shouko's hearing aids are broken and someone has to pay for them. Everyone in Ishida's class pins all the blame on Ishida and he becomes the main bully victim of the class. Ninomiya soon transfers to another school as well and after her transfer he realizes that Ninomiya, whom he had disdained, has, in fact, been protecting him in her own way from bullying. Ishida, however, gets a chance to redeem himself when he reunites with Ninomiya in high school. Upon their reunion, Ishida sets out to make up for his past behavior by giving Ninomiya the life that he felt he denied her, making friends with her classmates, both old and new, but everyone's past wrongs are not so easy to overcome. . . Due to the manga's premise, which deals with societal problems within Japan, particularly discrimination against those with disabilities, it was subject to a lawsuit attempting to bar the manga from release. However, the manga was eventually published and received a great deal of critical praise including Best Rookie Manga Award in 2008, 1st place in Bessatsu Shounen Magazine. It also won the New Creator Prize in 2015 and has received support from the Japanese Federation of the Deaf. By March 2014, it sold 700,000 copies.
