Now Viewing: azumanga_daiouTag type: Copyright あずまんが大王 A popular slice of life comedy manga by Azuma_Kiyohiko composed of a series of mainly standalone 4koma strips that was later made into an anime that focuses on a group of quirky and cute high school girls and the humorous situations they get into throughout their time in high school. The original manga ran from 1999 to 2002. It also later received additional chapters in 2009 with updated artwork resembling Azuma's work on Yotsuba&! The anime adaptation notably originated as a web episode/pilot titled Azumanga Web Daioh that was released in 2000. This incarnation notably features an entirely different set of cast and crew from the final TV series and was designed to gauge audience interest in a potential online adaptation. Then a trailer featuring the cast and crew of the main TV series was released December 6, 2001, followed by the TV series in 2002. The success of the series influenced subsequent character-driven slice of life comedy anime/manga with female dominant casts like Hyakko, K-ON!, Lucky Star, etc. The strange title is actually a combination of the mangaka's name, the word manga, and the name of the original publisher (Dengenki Daioh) It is also the source of the mai waifu meme. It comes from a line spoken by the perverted teacher Kimura when he reveals to his shocked students that his wife is a rather attractive woman.
