It is the second anime adaptation of the manga, but has no relation to the others besides sharing the same source material. It is a TV series thats spans two 26 episode seasons, a movie, and several OVAs. It was animated by Production I.G. and began on October 1, 2002. It was written and directed by Kamiyama Kenji with a genre-blending soundtrack composed by Kanno Yoko with the female vocals handled by Russian singer Origa and Italian singer Ilaria Graziano; the male vocals are handled by frequent Kanno collaborator Steve Conte and Scott Matthew. The characters are designed by Shimomura_Makoto. The original creator of the franchise Shirou Masamune also contributed some plots, character sketched and mech designs. Oshii Mamoru, the director of the 1995 anime movie, also contributed some ideas for the series' second season. The series was made with a budget of 800 million yen. The series is set in 2030, where the majority of the populace are either humans with prosthetics or full blown cyborgs. The series follows the various adventures of the special police task force, Section 9, as they solve various cybercrimes. This series notably alternates between episodic stories, called stand alone episodes or individual episodes, and episodes that advance the main plot of the series, called Complex or Dividual episodes. Both seasons have different main plots/conspiracies that Section 9 have to solve. In contrast to the movie, this incarnation of the franchise also puts stronger emphasis on Section 9 as a team with each member contributing to the solving of each case and almost every member getting at least one episode focusing on them. The series also includes members that were omitted from the 1995 movie adaptation such Borma, Paz, and Saito. Although the series offers its own interpretation of the franchise's characters, the returning characters are played by the same seiyuu as the 1995 movie. Alongside the philosophy the 1995 movie was famous for, this series puts stronger emphasis on the sociopolitical implications of each case. This incarnation inspired multiple video game adaptations including one online multiplayer shooter called Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex First Recon. After the release of Solid State Society in 2006, this continuity lay dormant until it was revived with the 2020 anime Ghost in the Shell: Sac 2045.
