The player plays as an unnamed teen boy who is invited by childhood friend Sayori to join the literature club at high school. There, he meets three other girls: Natsuki, Yuri, and Monika. Together, the four of them form strong emotional bonds with each other as they write and discuss poetry while preparing for an upcoming festival to rope in more members. But as the player grows closer to the girls, he gradually discovers that the seemingly innocent girls have some deep-seated emotional problems. . . The game is actually a metafictional psychological horror game in disguise as a romance visual novel. The game's story was inspired both by Salvato's mixed feelings towards anime and interest in surreal and unsettling experiences. For this game's horror, he aimed to scare the player by making them uncomfortable as opposed to just shoving scary things in players' faces. The game was highly successful, being downloaded over one million times within 3 months of its debut, and receiving critical praise. Its popularity was also boosted by being featured on various video game streamers' channels.
