In Japan it is known as 熱血硬派くにおくん外伝 リバーシティーガールズ (Hot-Blooded Tough Guy Kunio Side Story: River City Girls) It is an American made 2019 comedic beat-em-up installment of the mostly Japanese produced long-running Kunio-kun franchise. It was released on September 5, 2019 and was developed by WayForward and directed by Adam Tierney and Bannon Rudis. Arc_System_Works also helped publish the game and handled the Japanese localization. The soundtrack was composed by Megan Mcduffee, Chipzel, and Dale North. The vocal songs were performed by Kayli Mills and Kira Buckland (both of whom play the main characters), Cristina Vee, and Youtuber NateWantsToBattle. The art was handled by Rem_(artist). Kyoko and Misako, traditionally supporting characters in the Kunio-kun series, are given the spotlight when their boyfriends/series heroes, Kunio and Riki, are suddenly kidnapped. Furious at this turn of events, they immediately spring into action and fight their way through River City to get them back. The game is a co-op beat em up game. Players advance through each level by defeating all enemies and leveling up their characters. Players can also complete side quests to get more material so they can buy items, skills, and increase stats. The Japanese made Kunio-kun games had a history of being altered significantly when they were brought over to the North America. This game combines elements from both the Japanese originals and the localizations. The game intentionally combines Japanese and American cultural aesthetics in its depiction of the setting and its visual style. The characters have also been redesigned from their very 1980s style looks to reflect fashion trends in the 2010s. This installment is notably more female-dominant than the rest of the series with most of the central characters and even random enemies being female. The voice acting is entirely in English in both the original and Japanese versions of the game.
