It is a first person shooter game developed by id software, and created by the same development team as its predecessor Doom 2016. It was directed by Hugo Martin with art handled by Tony Garza. The story was written by Martin, Adam Gascoine, Jon Lane, and Chad Mossholder. The metal soundtrack was composed by Mick Gordon who hired vocalists from various metal bands to act as the choir. It was released on March 20, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The game was also released alongside a rerelease of Doom 64, which added new levels to the 1997 game that further tied it to Doom 2016 and Eternal. The game continues two years after its predecessor. The forces of Hell have grown stronger since then and have now spread from Mars and are in the process of overrunning Earth. Doomguy, along with his AI friend Vega, returns to Earth to stop the demonic invasion, but finds himself not only contending with hell demons but also the Maykrs, led by Khan Maykr. The Maykrs are an angel-like race from the realm of Urdak who are in league with the demons, and they are working with three high ranking Hell Priests to destroy Earth for the good of Urdak. As Doomguy tears his ways through hell's forces to eliminate the priests and Khan, he finds himself uncovering various details of his past. The game expands on many aspects of its predecessor. Along with more up close execution kills, Doomguy has become more mobile, and can grapple onto enemies and objects with his new Meat Hook. The main campaign also has a hub section, called the Fortress of Doom, which is Doomguy's pad. Players can unlock more items to add to his living space. This game notably greatly expands on the lore of the franchise and explicitly confirms that this game and its predecessor are in continuity with Doom 1, Doom 2, and Doom 64, something that Doom 2016 only hinted at. For the multiplayer, the game introduces a 2 vs 1 battlemode where two players take control of demons while one player controls Doomguy. The game was very well-received critically, receiving almost unanimously positive reviews.
