Now Viewing: kimetsu_no_yaibaTag type: Copyright Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Japanese: 鬼滅の刃, lit. "Blade of Demon Destruction") is a Japanese historical fantasy action manga series written and illustrated by gotouge_koyoharu. Gotouge created the manga after the failure to get their previous manga, Haeniwa no Zigzag, serialized. Editor Katayama Tatsuhiko suggested that Gotouge come up with story that would be easy for audiences to understand. Gotouge built the series off of one of their previous works, Kagarigari, to create a story revolving around demons and swordplay, which Gotouge figured would be familiar to Japanese audiences. The word Kimetsu is actually a made up word, the series was planned to be titled Kisatsu no Yaiba, with Kisatsu meaning kill, but that title was deemed to be too overt so it was softened with the neologism Kimetsu. It is set in the Taishou period of Japanese history and centers around a kind-hearted young boy named (kamado_tanjirou), who's the eldest child of his family. He lives a peaceful life in the mountainside, taking care of his younger siblings and helping out his family. However, his peaceful life is ruined when a demon storms his house while Tanjirou is away and slaughters his entire family. The only survivor is his younger sister and second oldest Kamado child, (kamado_nezuko) who has been turned into a demon. Demons have an inherent hunger for human flesh and Nezuko herself immediately attacks Tanjirou once he returns. However, Tanjirou refuses to kill his sister, finds a way to calm her down, and convinces a passing by demon slayer, Giyu Tomioka to spare Nezuko. Giyu gives Nezuko a bamboo mouth guard to prevent her from eating humans and, seeing potential in Tanjirou, instructs him to learn the Water Breathing technique from his master Urakodaki. Tanjirou soon joins the secret Demon Slayer Corps and embarks on a quest to find a cure for his sister while saving civilians from demons. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 15, 2016 to May 18, 2020, and its chapters collected in 21 tankōbon volumes as of July 2020. It is published in English by Viz Media and simulpublished by Shueisha in English and Spanish on their Manga Plus platform. The series was modestly successful, but it didn't become a major success until the release of its anime adaptation in 2019. An anime television series adaptation by Ufotable aired in Japan from April 6, 2019 to September 28, 2019. It was directed by Sotozaki Haruo with a soundtrack composed by Shiina Gou and Kajiura Yuki. The anime notably features many famous seiyuu in its cast, with the main characters being played by some of the more popular younger seiyuu and the supporting characters played by many veteran seiyuu. The first season of the series adapted the first few arcs of the manga. After the first season, ufotable decided to adapt the rest of the manga by adapting a story arc as one single installment. The Mugen Train arc was turned into a film and later compiled as a short seven episode TV series with some new animation. The arc after that, Entertainment District Arc as adapted as 11 episode TV series, etc. The release of the anime sparked a massive popularity explosion to the series and turned into one of the most successful anime franchises of the later 2010s early 2020s. Its success benefitted the manga, leading to it winning the Special Prize from the 25th edition of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021, and becoming one of the best selling manga series of all time, selling over 150 million copies. The manga itself inspired multiple spinoffs centered around its supporting cast as well as a comedic high school alternate universe stories titled Kimetsu Gakuen.
