Now Viewing: nishimiya_shoukoTag type: Character 西宮 硝子 The brown_haired female lead of Koe_no_Katachi. As an elementary schooler, she has short_hair, but as a high schooler she has long_hair. She is a kind-hearted, selfless, and well-meaning girl who happens to be deaf. She communicated by using sign language and writing text on a notebook. She is capable of speech, but struggles with speaking coherently. In spite of the setbacks her condition may cause, her mother enrolls her into a normal elementary school and has her participate in classes alongside able-bodied kids. Shouko has to wear a hearing aid to be able to hear her teacher. Her classmates are unused to dealing with someone in her condition, and unfortunately for her, lack the patience and empathy to treat her as an equal. Shouko is constantly bullied with protagonist Ishida Shouya being amongst her worst bullies. However, when one of Shouko's hearing aids is damaged, Shouya is the only one to be punished, and Shouko, to Shouya's shock, is the only one who's willing to defend him in her own way. Shouko retains her kind personality as a high schooler in spite of all the cruel bullying she suffered and she is willing to be friends with the now repentant Shouya. However, while Shouya has changed and tries his best to make things up with Shouko, Shouya's former friends are not as forgiving and the resentment they felt towards Shouko lingers to the present day. Furthermore, Shouko is deeply emotionally damaged by her past treatment and is tormented by a strong sense of guilt, frequently blaming herself when things go wrong for her loved ones. She is voiced by Hayami_Saori in Japanese. For the English dub, she is voiced by two actresses, by Melanie Lemaistre as a child, and by deaf live action actress Lexi Cowden in her only voice acting role to date, as her high school self.
