It was written and directed by Adachi Shingo, based off of a concept created by Asaura. The soundtrack was composed by Mutsuki Shuuhei and the characters were designed by Imigimuru. It is set in a Japan that has become so peaceful that it is considered to be the safest country in the world. Crime has become practically nonexistent and the only danger seems to come in the form of occasional accidents--or so those in power claim. In reality, Japan is only considered 'safe' because any potential threat to the nation's stability is terminated with extreme prejudice. The counter terrorist organization Direct Attack, D.A., for short are the ones truly responsible for keeping Japan. They employ covert ops agents known as Lycoris, which are made up of orphan girls. After they're taken in to DA these orphan girls are trained in the art of combat so that they can use lethal force to take down the countless terrorists that threaten the nation. All of their operations are top secret and extensively covered up. The story follows Inoue Takina, a Lycoris who gets into trouble because of her particularly aggressive and ruthless tactics. Even though she saved a fellow Lycoris in the process, Takina is blamed for screwing up an operation and as punishment, is removed from DA and sent to work at a cafe LycoReco. LycoReco superficially appears to be a regular small cafe, but its staff are all involved with DA. Takina is paired with a staff member who is a fellow Lycoris, Nishikagi Chisato, the most skilled Lycoris who ever lived, and is famous for saving numerous people in Tokyo's biggest crisis. In spite of Chisato's accomplishment, she is also an outcast in Lycoris circles due to her seemingly carefree attitude and philosophy; she absolutely refuses to take a life. Takina has to work with her polar opposite Chisato on various odd jobs in the hopes she can one day get back into DA's good graces. As the two of them take on various assignments, they soon learn that there was much more to the operation that cost Takina's position at DA than meets the eye and they are soon faced with threats that can not only destabilize Japan, but also threaten DA. . . The project began life as a collaboration between light novel writer Asaura and A-1 Pictures. Asaura's former editor had a meeting with A-1 producer Kashiwada Shin-ichirou about Saekano, but the conversation drifted to talking about Asaura where he was described as crazy thanks to his habit of building stories around outlandish premises. Kashiwada had read a previous work of Asaura's, Death Need Round, which was also a girls with guns action story, and he hired Asaura to create the concept behind Lycoris Recoil. The series was notably one of the big surprise successes of 2022. It was an anime original product that in some of its initial marketing, hid its actual premise with said marketing emphasizing the scenes at LycoReco and making it look more like a slice of life comedy at a workplace. Later promotions reflected the actual content of the anime more accurately. The anime quickly became the Most Watched Anime from the summer season in Japan and spawned multiple popular memes. It even caught the attention of Metal Gear creator Kojima Hideo who praised the series and wrote a foreword for the light novel adaptation of the anime. The anime spawned a short comedic side-story anime called Lycoris Recoil: Friends are the Thieves of Time that focuses on comedic slice of life antics of the main cast. This anime ran from April 16, 2025 to May 21, 2025 with each episode handled by a different director.
