For the first seven volumes, the artwork was done by Okiura. From Volume 8 onwards, the artwork is done by Choco. It has been adapted into a manga with art by Akahoshi_Kenji. It was adapted into an anime TV series by the studio 8-bit on January 6, 2011. The first season of the anime ended on March 31, 2011. A second season is scheduled for Fall 2013. The anime is directed by Kikuchi Yasuhito and written by Shimo Fukihiko. Music is composed by Nanase Hikaru/Itou Masumi. In the near future, the eccentric female scientist Shinonono Tabane has created a new piece of military technology that has changed the way the world works, the Infinite Stratos. It is a powered exoskeleton that is vastly superior to any other military weapon available. The nations of the world have enacted an Alaska Treaty, agreeing that the IS can not be used for warfare and that every nation in the world will have access to the IS technology which will be equally distributed to the nations. The introduction of the IS has not only changed international relations but has also changed gender status. The IS can only be piloted by women and subsequently, women become more valued than men. Women are sent to the prestigious international academy Infinite Stratos Academy to be trained on how to pilot the IS. Ten years after the IS has been introduced, another world changing event occurs. Orimura Ichika, a teenage boy, is discovered to be able to pilot an IS. He is the only male in the world who is able to use an IS and no one is sure why he is able to do so. The Japanese government sends Orimura to attend the IS Academy and undergo full training to be an IS pilot. Orimura is uncomfortable with the attention his unique status as the sole male IS pilot gives him and his life grows more complicated once he unknowingly gains the affections of some of his female classmates. The novels have sold 1.2 million copies by 2011.
