Izayoi Sakuya is the star of this game while the previous game's heroine Hakurei Reimu takes a supporting role much like Richter Belmont did in Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. Sakuya returns home one night to discover that her master Remilia Scarlet, along with Patchouli Knowledge and Hong Meiling, have mysteriously disappeared. After a conversation with Yakumo Yukari, Sakuya realizes that Yukari has something to do with their disappearance, but Yukari escapes from Sakuya leaving cryptic hints about the lack of Spring. Sakuya heads out to investigate and find her master and friends. The game notably features established anime seiyuus as the voices of the Touhou characters.
