It is a 6 episode space opera mecha action OVA that ran from November 26, 2004 to August 25, 2006 and was produced by Gainax. Unlike the original, it features a different cast and crew although Tanaka Kouhei once again composes the music and also sings "Diebuster~" in the OVA's eyecatches. It is now created by the core creative team that made FLCL. It was directed by Tsurumaki Kazuki, written by Enokido Yoji, characters designed by Sasamoto_Yoshiyuki, and mechs designed by Nadaera Bukichi, Ishigaki Junya, Koyama Shigeto, and Izuna Yoshitsune. Despite the differences in cast and crew, the OVA's story strongly parallels the original and it also shares the original's escalating battle scenes. Nono is a clumsy teenage waitress who aspires to be a mech pilot. One day, she encounters and becomes involved with a battle between mecha pilot Lal'C and a space monster. Although Nono doesn't get in a mech, she performs surprisingly well in the battle, and the serious Lal'C decides to take the excitable Nono with her and introduces her to the other mech pilots like her, collectively known as the Topless. Humanity is once again at war with the space monsters, and the Topless are seen as the only hope in the battle. Although Nono gets to interact with the other mecha pilots, she does not seem to be able to pilot a mech well and is consistently pushed to the sidelines. But Nono and the Topless soon discover surprising facts about Nono and the space monsters that turn everything they've known on their heads. The series can be thought of as a spiritual precursor to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann with the art style and action scenes bearing a strong resemblance to the later series and both series sharing cast and crew members such as Fukui_Yukari who plays Nono also playing Nia in that series. A Gunbuster vs Diebuster movie was also created that compiled the two OVAs. The series made its Super Robot Wars debut in Super Robot Wars Z3: Tengoku Hen.
