He was introduced as a rival in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but his rivalry with Sonic has died down since then. He is the generally serious protector of the Master Emerald, but he loves to one up Sonic, often laughing mischievously whenever he does this, especially in the many times he interferes with Sonic's quest in his debut. After Sonic 3 and Knuckles, he has been a recurring character and frequently collaborates with Sonic. He was implied to have an attraction to Rouge the Bat though the romantic subtext between them has been toned down since Sonic Adventure 2 and it is unclear if he still feels something for her. The song that plays on Knuckles' stage Wild Canyon notably has a lot of innuendo with suggestive lyrics concerning Rouge. He uses his spiked knuckles in combat and to climb up walls. He is also capable of flight. In his Sonic Adventure appearances, he is associated with hip hop music. In Sonic Adventure 2, said hip hops songs are performed by Hunnid-P with the lyrics representing Knuckles' thoughts as he goes through his levels. He is voiced by Matsumoto_Yasunori (90s OVA) and Canna_Nobutoshi (Sonic Adventure onwards).
