Now Viewing: miyamoto_shigeruTag type: Character 宮本 茂 A Japanese video game director/producer born on November 16, 1952 in Kyoto, Japan. Thanks to his work on the Mario and Zelda series which he both created, he is one of the most well known and respected video game creators. In the case of the former, Super Mario Bros. for the NES/Famicom is often considered to be the game that saved the video game industry. His official awards include: inclusion in Time Magazine's Most Influential People list in 2006-2007, being knighted by the French Ministry of Culture in 2006, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 at the Game Developers Choice Awards, and being the first person to be honored in 1998 in the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame. Many of Miyamoto's games have become influential in their own right. He has also been involved with other Nintendo video game franchises like Star Fox and F-Zero. Although he did not create Metroid, he was also involved with Metroid Prime. In fact, he suggested that Retro Studios make a Metroid game and also came up with the idea to make the game first person. He has a habit of basing video games around his hobbies and gets a lot of his ideas from his personal life. For example, the Mario enemy Chain Chomp was based off of a frightening experience he had as a child when a ferocious dog attempted to attack him but he was saved by the chain attached to the dog's neck which restrained the dog. As a designer, he emphasizes gameplay first and foremost, a belief that he maintains even as heavily story driven games gain popularity. As a producer, he tends to veto certain story elements his fellow developers initially planned to incorporate. In the case of the Zelda franchise, Aonuma Eiji, who started working on the series with Ocarina of Time, is usually responsible for fleshing out the mythology of the series and establishing stronger continuity between the games. Miyamoto has also mentored Pokemon creator Tajiri_Satoshi. He has also done some artwork for the games and even drew the original cover art for Super Mario Bros, but for most part, other artists do the artwork for the games. He frequently works with Tezuka Takashi and composer Kondo Koji.
