The original manga debuted in 2003 and concluded on September 2013. It was adapted into a 2008 anime TV series by Bones which is faithful to the source until 3/4ths of the way through. The anime is directed by Igarashi Takuya, written by Yamatoya Akatsuki, and its character designs are done by Ito_Yoshiyuki. It created an original ending while the manga was still ongoing. The anime's music is composed by Iwasaki Taku and features quite a few English vocal songs including hip hop songs performed by Lotus Juice. The series has a strong Lovecraftian horror influences mixed in with its exaggerated action scenes. Madness is a recurring theme in the story and many characters in the series go mad or are in danger of slipping into madness. It is set in a supernatural alternate universe with a strong Halloween aesthetic. Protagonists Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans are two students at Death Weapon Meister Academy who are collecting 99 souls of evil humans and one of a witch's. Soul is a humanoid weapon; he has a human form, but he can transform into a scythe that is wielded by Maka. The two of them must work together effectively in order to win fights. Every other student at the academy has a similar master-weapon relationship. When a wielder and a weapon succeed at collecting 99 souls plus a witch's, the weapon becomes a death scythe, a weapon that can be used the principal of the school, Shinigami. However, Maka and her fellow students are soon faced with a much greater threat: Medusa Gorgon, a malevolent witch who pretends to be a kindly school doctor at the Academy, is planning to revive Asura, who was sealed within the Academy by Shinigami and had previously plunged the world into madness. Other factions soon surface with their own agendas. The staff and students are soon embroiled in their most difficult battles to date. . . The series also received a primarily comedy based side story/prequel titled Soul Eater Not! also created by Ohkubo. The opening sections of the manga and the first three episodes of the anime were originally a trio of one shots done by Ohkubo; he later decided to combine them into one story and the protagonists of the one shots became the main characters of Soul Eater. For the manga, Ohkubo was inspired by the work of director Tim Burton and Jk Rowling's Harry Potter series. The series is not meant to be named after its male lead, rather, Ohkubo intended the title to refer to the main antagonist of the story. As many of the characters in the series can transform into weapons, there are minimal one on one duels in the series. The weapons and their meisters must work together in order to win. The series has no relation to the hentai Shoujo Senki Soul Eater.
