She has a dark colored magical girl outfit in contrast to Nanoha's white and blue outfit and wields an axe like magical weapon. Despite her darker and more sinister image, Nanoha immediately notes that she appears quite sad and lonely when they first meet. Although Fate initially trounces Nanoha and is her greatest obstacle in collecting the Jewel Seeds, Nanoha becomes fascinated with Fate. She undergoes rigorous training so that she can keep up with Fate and every time they encounter each other, Nanoha attempts to reach out to Fate. Nanoha's assessment of Fate turns out to be correct as Fate feels an attachment to her mother Precia Testarossa and repeatedly insists that she used to be a kind woman. Unfortunately, Precia does not love her back and cruelly abuses her. Still, no matter how badly Precia treats her, Fate is unable to bring herself to hate Precia. Fate's only companion is her familiar Arf who is very sympathetic towards her, but as time goes on, Nanoha eventually succeeds in reaching out to Fate and the two become best friends and possibly secret lovers. She functions as Naonha's rival in the first Nanoha TV series, taking the role that Chrono Harlaown originally occupied in the Nanoha prototype Lyrical Toybox. Fate became an immensely popular character over the course of Nanoha's first season and in subsequent Nanoha installments, she became a secondary lead heroine and is often side by side with Nanoha. She is more serious than Nanoha and is more prone to doubting herself, but she still has a strong and kind heart. She also won the 2008 International Saimoe Tournament. Her relationship with Nanoha is extremely close to the point that many fans see the two as lovers. The anime staff have mostly avoided answering the question of their sexuality, but Nanoha and Fate' seiyuus believe the two are in a romantic relationship.
