It was directed by Nakazato Nobuya and features character designs by Umetsu_Yasuomi. Music is composed by Yamane Michiru, Hata Aki, and Kobayashi Hiroshi. It is one of the more story driven Contra games and is unique in the series in that it features branching paths and also multiple endings. Series protagonist Bill Rizer is also absent in this game though male hero Ray Poward is rather similar to him. The antagonists of the game are also human as opposed to the aliens in other Contra games. While there are plenty of minor enemies and obstacles that attack the heroes, the game throws much more bosses at the player characters than other Contra games. Contra Shattered Soldier will also use a similar boss-oriented gameplay as this game. It has been five years since Bill and Lance foiled the alien invasion in Contra 3. However, Earth is still fraught with numerous problems. A group of four warriors (Ray Poward, Sheena Etranzi, Brad Fang, and Browny) called the Hard Corps have been assembled to combat crime and terrorism. One night, robots suddenly run amok and destroy a good chunk of a city. The Hard Corps manage to stop the robots, but the culprits behind the robot attack manage to steal an alien cell from a laboratory. The Hard Corps work together to retrieve the alien cell and foil the culprits' plot. The Japanese version of the game and the North American release are slightly different. The former gives the player a life bar and unlimited continues while the latter provides no life bar and limited continues. In the latter, all player characters will die in one hit. The latter version of Hard Corps is often regarded as one of the most difficult Contra games. The title is a pun on the word hardcore.
