The game was made without involvement of the series creator Kamiya_Hideki, who was not even aware that a sequel was being made until the game was being localized for North America and an interviewer asked him about it, and was instead directed by Itsuno Hideaki. The game's development was notably very rushed and troubled. Itsuno himself was not even the original director of the game; he was brought in to finish the project an uncredited director started halfway through the game's development only to discover that the original developers had only completed one weapon animation. He and his team were forced to produce and release a workable game within a few months. The story is written by Akitomo Katsuya, Takimoto Masashi, and Matsukawa Shusaku. The soundtrack was composed by Shibata Tetsuya, Kohda Masato, and Ise Satoshi. The artwork was handled by Ikeno_Daigo. After a short encounter in a museum, Lucia invites Dante to come to Dumary Island. There, Dante meets Lucia's mother Matier, who wants Dante to work with Lucia to stop a businessman named Arius in her stead. Arius wants to revive Argosax the Chaos in order to conquer the world. Dante and Lucia set out to stop Arius, but the latter suffers an identity crisis once she discovers what she actually is. . . This game is generally considered to be the easiest of the Devil May Cry games. In contrast to the original, the game's environments are designed to be much larger in scale; producer Tanaka Tsuyoshi estimates that they are nine times bigger than the original's environments. Although it retains the gameplay style of the original, the game is darker and more somber in tone and Dante, who is known for his trash-talking, is conspicuously silent and stoic throughout most of the game. Capcom also partnered with clothing company Diesel and Dante and Lucia can wear clothes created by the company's designers as opposed to their standard outfits. The game is split into two discs, one featuring Dante, and the other featuring Lucia. This game is also the first Devil May Cry game to have playable female characters. Lucia was made playable in response to complaints that Trish wasn't playable in the first game; Trish herself is also playable for the first time, but has no impact on the storyline. This game gave her a more developed fighting style, which became the basis for her future combat appearances, and she uses the same weapons she used in Devil May Cry 2 except Nightmare-y in Marvel vs Capcom 3. The game was met with mixed reviews upon release with many comparing it unfavorably to the original, but the game was still a financial success, selling 1.7 million copies by September 2006. Kamiya Hideki was angry about the game being made without consulting him and the PS2 release of his next game Viewtiful Joe makes some derogatory references towards this game when Dante is selected as a playable character that imply that the Dante of Devil May Cry 2 was not the actual Dante. On the other hand, the version of Dante featured in this game was a guest playable character in Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne and much of the crew who worked on this game returned for Devil May Cry 3 and 4, which were much better received and brought back Dante's trash talking and cocky personality as well as the franchise's trademark difficulty. Nevertheless, the game was still included in later rerelease Devil May Cry HD Collection alongside Devil May Cry 1 and 3, and many of the crew members who worked on the game stuck with the franchise. For the longest time, the game was chronologically the last of the Devil May Cry games, but the game's canon status was sketchy as fans and the developers themselves considered the game the black sheep of the franchise, and it was barely acknowledged by subsequent entries. However, the game finally received a followup in 2019 with Devil May Cry 5, the latest game in the Devil May Cry timeline. During production of said game, the creators also decided to retcon the timeline by placing Devil May Cry 2 in between Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 4.
