He often wears sunglasses on his head. He was interested in video games from a young age, which was inspired by his neighbor who often invited him to play games and was inspired to become a game developer after reading an interview with Miyamoto Shigeru and Endo Masanobu in Famicom magazine. He started his professional career by joining Capcom in 1994 and made his directorial debut with Resident Evil 2. He is most well known for creating the Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Bayonetta franchises and for popularizing the character action game genre with his work; action games with in-depth combat mechanics and ranking systems that encourage the player to defeat the enemies in the most impressive way possible. He cites the original Castlevania as his favorite action game and considers The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Gradius to be his biggest influences as a game designer. His games are often filled with stylized and exaggerated action and often have a tongue in cheek tone. His games often have a combat grading system that evaluates how impressively the player fights. He loves 1980s-era arcade games and shoot em ups, and his games will frequently have at least one segment that pays homage to them. He often develops the protagonists of his games around a few character traits: Dante was his Kamiya's idea of a cool and stylish man, Viewtiful Joe a mischievous youth, and Bayonetta a modernized feminine European witch who wields four guns. He is also fond of 1980s arcade games and often pays homage to them in his work. Although he has created four separate series: Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Ookami, and Bayonetta, he has only directed the first entry in each of them although he was involved with Viewtiful Joe 2 and Bayonetta 2 in a reduced role. After Devil May Cry, he became part of the short-lived Capcom funded development studio Clover Studios and during his time there, he directed Okami and Viewtiful Joe. He and quite a few of Clover Studio's members left Capcom after Clover closed down and reunited to form a new studio called Platinum Games, which is where Kamiya worked from October 2007 to October 12, 2023. In spite of what happened, Kamiya has stated that he holds no ill will towards Capcom in general, considering it his old home. After Devil May Cry, the games he's directed have often failed to sell as well as hoped despite generally receiving positive reviews and even praise from fellow game developers. Nevertheless, he has continued to consistently work on video games undeterred and many of his games like Ookami and Viewtiful Joe series have achieved cult popularity. He is a playable character in the game The_Wonderful_101 where he is called Wonder Director. Outside of developing games, he is also well known for mocking and banning people who annoy him on Twitter. His Twitter persona is semi tongue-in-cheek with his banning habits and insults becoming running jokes. He has explained that he sees Twitter as being the equivalent of going to a bar with friends. He is often considered by others to be less harsh outside of Twitter. He is also a Guiness World Record certificate recipient; he earned the certificate for having the highest score in the world for the game Arcade Archives Ninja Kid. He started a Youtube channel on September 26, 2023, shortly after he announced that he was leaving Platinum.
